TSUNAMI by gemma aleixandre

TSUNAMI

On December 26, in the 2004, there was an earthquake four thousand meters deep in the Indian Ocean, About 260 kilometres west of the coast of Aceh (Indonesia).
I think this catastrophe is a very important fact in history, because died many people, other people were wounded and it caused a huge damage.
The earthquake took place near the island of Sumatra, Because two tectonic plates, the Australian and Eurasian clashed, caused tremors throughout the region west.
This movement in turn displaced hundreds of cubic metres of water and generated a tsunami or tidal wave. The wave then spread throughout the Indian Ocean with an enormous speed. It caused chaos. At 9 degrees. For the next 15 minutes to 10 hours occurred multiple tsunamis. They reached 15 metres high that struck across the region on the Indian Ocean coast especially devastating parts of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
In Somalia (in Africa to 4100 km.'s Epicenter) there were such abroad effects thatcaused waves that have travelled the Pacific Ocean causing unrest in the tides of North and South America.

The consequences of the tsunami were:

-230,000 people killed, about 2 million will need humanitarian aid, and about 5 million have been left homeless
-Decreased tourism in these countries
-The earthquake also caused a slight alteration on the speed of rotation of the earth and cut the length of day by three microseconds.
